Want some fresh meat? The butcher shop is super fresh, and they also have a standing bar, so come and have a drink.

Hi, it’s “Drunk Uncle”!

Today I went to “Kikuoka Seinikuten” in Hiroshima on my way home from work.

Uncle Drunk has recently come to realise once again that Hiroshima has great food and great alcohol. There’s a wide variety of sake, and the city is packed with strong local specialties such as okonomiyaki, oysters, and momiji manjyu that are enough to compete in national competitions.
But you know… there’s no way they can offer fresh meat, especially better than raw, right…?
I’m suddenly craving sashimi like the kind at “Niku no Maekawa” (Oimachi), a place Uncle Drunk frequents…

However, there is a store here in Hiroshima that can satisfy this Uncle Drunk’s craving for raw meat.

アダルトな雰囲気の面構え。立ち呑みは18時から。

According to sources, it’s a standing bar run by a butcher called Kikuoka Butcher Shop. During the day it’s an ordinary local butcher shop, and at night it operates as a standing bar.
A place run by a hardworking single mother who works day and night, this Drunk Uncle who wants to support hardworking people goes in without hesitation.
Sorry to have kept all the good children waiting. This place also has the “Happy Meal” that captures the hearts of kids at a certain McDonald’s, so this looks like it might be a bit fun. Maybe I’ll fancy it as an adult “Happy Meal”… But don’t tell your mom.

The restaurant is standing-only, so I ordered a drink first. In the end, I ordered a single item: a highball (What, a Happy Set? There’s no way one drink like that will make me happy, so I rejected it from the start…). The restaurant has a nice atmosphere that gives off a Showa-era vibe. The refrigerated case has the same feel as “Niku no Maekawa”.
Then, the long-awaited moment, I started looking for raw meat. All I could see was the sign in the top left corner of the menu, “Absolutely recommended!” There’s no such thing as “absolutely” in this world… I ordered low-temperature raw liver and low-temperature raw tongue. All items were 298 yen, a stylish price that plays on the name Nikuya.

Checking out the interior of the store. The sign is written in a nice font. They also have an all-you-can-drink menu. I have work tomorrow, so I can’t drink that much today. This cowardly old guy will stick to house today…
The staff and customers are young, and I’m the only Ojisan. I feel a little out of place as I wait for my drink.
By the way, at “Niku no Maekawa” in Oimachi,Tokyo, the staff are Chinese, and the customers are mostly local drunk oyaji and thugs, or Jonan-style salarymen and women from the Shinagawa area. Perhaps this is also due to the nature of the location and the local area.

The highball arrives. It’s pretty tasty, I prefer Hoppy, but if they don’t have it, the only option is a highball, and you’ll definitely get drunk. At other stores, the waiter will ask, “What kind of highball would you like?” but do you think Drunk Uncle with a poor palate can tell the difference in subtle flavors? It’s rude to even ask… “Kikuoka Seinikuten” is straightforward in that respect, and they only serve simple “highballs”, not Kaku Highballs or Ginger Highballs.

The long-awaited raw meat arrived… Slow-cooked sashimi. I can’t find the right way to describe it, but it was delicious.
Raw food is generally good… The highball was gulped down in an instant.

刮目せよ、この表面張力

I ordered an additional glass of sake. A smooth, full “Mokkiri style”. The brand was… sorry, I forgot, as I had memory loss due to the standard alcohol. I gulped it down and left the bar.

A butcher shop x standing bar with a different feel to “Niku no Maekawa”.

Personally, I think the sleazy feel of “Niku no Maekawa” and the sense of guilt of eating chicken fillet sashimi in the dirtiness of that shop suit me better.

Don’t act all high and mighty and make comparisons? Let me express my feelings however I like, dude, after all it’s a matter of Vibes…
