Hi, it’s “Drunk Uncle”!
Today I went to “Rojiura Avantgarde” in Fukushima, Osaka on my way home from work.
When I say Fukushima, I don’t mean Fukushima Prefecture in Tohoku, I’m talking about Fukushima in Osaka. I’ve already been to a few bars so I’m quite a wobble, but let’s walk around the city a bit more…
Fukushima, Osaka is the area west of Osaka Station (Umeda area). There are several bars between JR Fukushima Station and Hanshin Fukushima Station, so this time I’ll be sneaking into that area.
First, let’s check out the bar’s exterior. It looks good. The combination of frosted glass and regular glass gives you a little glimpse into the inside, which is a nice touch. It would be unsettling if you couldn’t see inside the bar at all, so… Before I knew it, it was past 10:20pm, and the last order for food was 10:30pm, so I got in just in time.
I was ushered to the back of the counter, which was the best position.
The interior of the restaurant has a woody feel, and it’s comfortable for a natural-oriented, Drunk Uncle. Young staff members are busy running around the bar. The waiter reminds me that the last order for food is at 10:30 p.m. It’s a 30-minute game, and since it’s Osaka, there’s no point in staying too long.
As for drinks… they have quite a selection of carefully selected sake. It seems they don’t have second-class sake like “Ozeki”, which I’ve been drinking since coming to Osaka. I guess I’ll have to drink something tasty ones… I ordered “Kid” from Wakayama.
It’s been a while since I’ve had local sake, so I’m afraid my liver might be shocked, sorry buddy…
The drink arrives. An aluminium sake mug (chirori) style… seems to be fairly popular in Osaka. You can choose your own sake cup from a number of options. As if to prove that “Big fish in a small pond”, I went for a flat goldfish style. It is brought to your mouth more easily than a sake cup. Gulp! Second-class sake is good, but local sake is always better…
After licking the “Kid”, I have to choose some foods to go with it. I have the Tomato Mabo from the Specialty category, and the unusual Matsumae Pickled Celery from the quick menu. Both tomatoes and celery are good for you…
The appetizers arrive. The Matsumae pickles, which I tried for the first time, had a great texture. My first experience was stolen… And the tomato mabo, piping hot. Even Drunk Uncle with a poor palate could tell that both were delicious. Gulp! Wash it down with some sake and you’re in a good mood…
A marriage of delicious food and sake? Who cares! I thought, but this bar is pretty good. I feel like I’ll discover a new side of myself, and that puberty will begin tonight…
Gulp gulp! I downed the last drop of the Kid.
It seems that “adult drinks” are still available, but I think it’s time to put into practice the “quick drink and quick leave” rule. I leave the bar
