Hi, it’s “Drunk Uncle”!
Today I went to “Kanafuro” in Fukuyama on my way home from work.
Recently, Drunk Uncle has been appearing more and more around Hiroshima. Fukuyama City has the second largest population in the prefecture after Hiroshima City (about 450,000 people) and has an entertainment district, so Drunkers from the Bingo region are roaming the streets.
Right next to Fukuyama Station, there is an off-track betting parlor, and the town is a gathering place for not only Drunk Uncles but also gamblers, gamblers, thugs, and hustlers. There is a theory passed down that “good quality bars are concentrated near public racing stadiums”, so expectations are inevitably rising.
According to sources, there seem to be several more good old bars, so let’s dig in…
I started to head towards a dangerous bar about a 10-minute walk from Fukuyama Station.

I’ll be honest with you… this seems pretty dodgy… Either the owner is a really eccentric guy, or when I open the door it’ll be packed with regulars old drunkers, or I won’t even be allowed in at all…
As a first-time customer, I was hesitant to go in because the eccentric messages were scattered all over the place like a jewelry box, but oh well! I decided to just pop into this seedy bar…
I am shown to the counter. There are already male regulars and a group of local female thugs drinking there. As I am at the bottom of the restaurant’s caste system, I sit at the counter at the front.
Looking around the bar, it does indeed have a unique atmosphere. It’s the polar opposite of minimalism, and although it’s cluttered with things, it doesn’t seem too noisy. I think I’ll ignore the menu and start by enjoying the message the bar has to offer… says;
Gratitude/Station of life/There’s no end to looking up, so let’s enjoy the present – let’s have another beer. /As long as I’m alive, I’ll be satisfied if I can make beautiful flowers grow.
After looking around, I decided that it would be okay (but what is “P” anyway?), and decided it was time to order an adult drink… I timidly ordered some sake.
The landlady gave me a rare cold hand towel. And the long-awaited sake has arrived… Gulp! I don’t know the brand, but it’s good. I think I’ll settle down and drink it now…
I like the meat and potatoes appetizer. This must be the taste of Fukuyama’s bag. I still can’t forget my hometown…Gulp down those feelings of longing! Wash them away with alcohol. Alcohol makes you forget things like that in no time.
Memories are no good as otsumami, so a Drunk Uncle needs some “sashimi moriawase”…
The trio of “sashimi”, “yellowtail, striped jack, and sea bream” that was served to me was the specialty “Pichi Pichi” fish dish, and it didn’t look bad. I alternated between eating sashimi and drinking sake, it was the best…
When I casually opened the hand towel, oh, oh… a cute lion appeared. As an animal-loving, Dunk Uncle, I was happy, but at the same time, I was surprised to see my first patterned on hand towel, it was just like a lion. It’s these kinds of encounters with the unknown that keep me from exploring the bar…
Gulp! Once I’d drunk sake to the last drop, I quickly drank it and headed home.
The bar had a tough-looking appearance, but once inside it was a traditional, conservative bar. I’ll definitely be returning when I’m in Fukuyama…
You’re not used to going to these kinds of places, so you’re afraid to even go through the curtain? I’m not good at it either, but daring to go for it definitely increases your bar experience. Any way is a path of perseverance, and it’s true that one thing I’m afraid of has been eliminated…
But Fukuyama, huh…now that I think about it, I’ve come a long way…I think it’s time to stagger back to the hideout…
