Hi, it’s “Drunk Uncle”!

Today I went to “Taishu Shokudo Sansantei” in Fukuyama on my way home from work.

Sansantei, a popular restaurant, is located just a three-minute walk from Fukuyama Station. There are a lot of unique restaurants in the Fukuyama area, and I’ve come to like them quite a bit… It’s a restaurant in a prime location in front of the station, so it’s no exaggeration to say it’s the face of the town.
So, without further ado, why not give it a go?

As usual, I checked out the exterior.

I gazed into the store with a faraway look, thinking, “Oh, it must have a long history, a long-established diner?” However, it has only been open for a short time, having only opened in 2019… I almost accidentally registered it as a “World Heritage Bar Site for Drunk Uncle”. It’s what they call a neo-diner, but the appearance of the store gives it the impression of being a long-established establishment, so I didn’t notice. But if you label a place as a long-established or neo-established establishment, the food and drinks will taste bad.

I need to check the exterior a bit more.

Isn’t it time to move on from the “bar lookism” of judging a place based on appearances? It seems that many customers come here to eat set meals, and they recommend them. And the “free extra rice” is a great offer. Let’s go inside.

We entered the restaurant and sat at the counter. There were several customers inside, all of whom seemed to be enjoying their meal. Perhaps because of the time of day, there were not many locals drinking.
The first thing about the restaurant was the flashy menu. I’m sure I’m not the only one who was reminded of Banbaya. Surely you’d like to see a bit more on the menu?

Well, the menu is overwhelming. My neck is getting tired. Oh, there is a menu you can see at hand.

The menu written on the wall and in front of me seems to be the same. This one will do.
If you can’t decide, the only choice is the “Mountain Set” for a choi nomi: sake, potato salad, and fried octopus. Of course, there’s only one drink available, right…? “Tenpoichi (Fukuyama sake) 1 cup”, and I can’t wait for that, so I’ll have it “hiyashi(cold)”.

For everyone’s sake, I decided to wander around the store a little, knowing it might be dangerous. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any mysterious objects or Mitsuo Aida-inspired poems, which are common in quirky bars.
While I was doing this, a bottle of Tenpoichi sake (a drink for adults) and potato salad were delivered.

イツメンだな

I gulp down the “Tenpoichi”! It’s good, the Japanese sake. As an old man with a poor palate, I can’t put the delicate flavor into words, but I can tell if it’s good or bad. The potato salad is… well, it’s just normal. This one is also poor palate… (omitted).

Gulp! Wash the potato salad with sake. Mixing the raw rice and raw potatoes is like eating rice with okonomiyaki, or maybe it’s like mixing rice shochu with imo shochu… It’s no longer a question of compatibility or pairing, it’s “sake or sake,” or to use Tsuyoshi Nagabuchi’s words, “me or me” (from “Song of the Father of Nishi-Shinjuku”). Let’s stick to our own strong style…

While I was thinking about something that didn’t make sense, my “Tenpoichi” was empty… If it was a mobile order, I would just press the “refill” button, but this is a public restaurant that values the warmth of its customers, and there is a sense of humanity and style. “Ma’am, can I have some sake please?” I said, and gulped down my second glass.

タコの唐揚げ

The octopus is freshly fried. It’s crispy and delicious. Gulp! I wash it down with some sake.
I’ll add one more dish, since it’s a cold night… That’s what you get at times like that, right…? “3 kinds of oden”.

The oden was delivered in no time. It’s a traditional fast foo d that Japan can be proud of. The toppings are daikon radish, egg, and maruten, as you can see. When you combine oden with “Tenpoichi”, it’s just good. My mouth is moving between oden, sake, and more oden. Tonight’s a bit busy…

Gulp! I drink the Tenpoichi down to the last drop and leave the restaurant.

A nice pub. If you have time to play around with words like neo-style, it’s better to get a little drunk and be cool… I shouldn’t limit the scope of my life, I tell myself, so let’s go find the next bar…
